Facial Eczema !

People suffering from eczema on their faces hugely get disturbed as it brings them not only bothersome itching, but also it is exposed for all to see. It usually results in colossal lack of confidence in them.

Since its signs are the same as of eczema on other parts of the body, imagine the itching, scaling, thickening, and redness on the face.

Several types of eczema affect face. They are briefly described below.

Atopic Eczema/Dermatitis:

Atopic eczema is the most common type of eczema that affects faces of both children and adults. Foreheads and cheeks are usually the first parts of the face that get affected. Besides itching, redness, and dryness, burning and stinging can also crop up. The lower of eyelids particularly gets persistent problems.

Seborrhoeic Eczema/Dermatitis:

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is also a common type of eczema that causes eczema on faces of both adults and children. In adults, inner eyebrows, nose, and scalp are particularly affected. Armpits, chest, back, and eyelids are also sometimes affected. Red skin with yellowish flakes and dandruff are commonly faced by its sufferers. It is very persistent; it seems to heal during the treatment, but it reappears when the treatment stops.

Irritant Contact Eczema/Dermatitis:

It usually affects area around the lips.

Allergic Contact Eczema/Dermatitis:

Transfer of a sensitizing chemical to the face by the hands, e.g. nail varnish, contact with airborne substances like plant products or perfumed sprays, or direct contact with a sensitizing chemical, e.g. cosmetics are the factors that more commonly cause allergic contact eczema on the face.

Light Sensitive Eczema/Dermatitis:

It is seen that some older people develop a severe type of unexplained sun sensitivity that causes ‘extremely persistent eczema’  particularly on the areas of the face that are most exposed to light. “Chronic Actinic Dermatitis” is the term which is used for this condition. It is luckily a very rare case.

Facial Eczema Treatment:

Treatments are not different for facial eczema than the eczema on other parts of the body. The treatments include:

  • Avoiding ordinary soaps
  • Using emulsifying ointments
  • Avoiding irritating factors
  • Using anti-yeast creams with or without a mild topical steroid
  • Regularly applying moisturizers
