Emollients (moisturizers):

Oral antihistamines:
Antihistamines are also an option as they help to reduce histamines which are the cause of itching in the body. These are taken usually before going to bed to help in a good night’s sleep, uninterrupted by the urge to scratch. These medications are easily available in the market without prescription but self medication should be avoided and proper medical advice should be taken as these medications sometimes come with side effects.
Corticosteroids:
Eczema can also be treated with anti-inflammatory creams. Corticosteroids come in various degrees of strengths. It is advisable to know the lowest that works and use it. as using high strength of these could lead to thinning of the skin. In certain severe cases a short course of oral corticosteroids may be necessary. This however should be done under strict medical attention as things could worsen as medication is stopped.
Ultraviolet radiation therapy (phototherapy):
Ultraviolet radiation is also affective in reducing the symptoms of chronic eczema. This process is also requires strict medical monitoring and guidance. There is also the risk of ageing of the skin and skin cancer. This process usually takes up to 30 sessions in severe cases.
Cyclopsorin oral medication:
Cyclopsorin is also an affective medication in cases of severe eczema. However the usage of these drugs can have side effects like high blood pressure, kidney problems, skin infections, and a possible increased risk of skin cancer. that is why they should not be taken without proper medical consultation. |
