Eczema Herpeticum !

Eczema herpeticum or Kaposi’s varicelliform is the name given to the most serious complication of atopic eczema. When herpes simplex virus infects eczema, the life-threatening eczema herpeticum develops.

63 patients with 75 episodes of eczema herpeticum were seen by the clinicians at the Department of Dermatology of University of Mainz. An increasingly highly ratio of augmented incidence of the disease was reported in an analysis. 13 cases were reported from 1969 to 1981. From 1982 to 1986 the number of cases increased to 62. 22.7 years was reported to be the connote age of the patients. 42 patients, exactly 56 percent, were between 15 and 24. It was reported before the analysis that eczema herpeticum patients are mainly infants, after the research work on eczema herpeticum showed that this was not true. Five of those patients were faced with one recurrence, two got 2 recurrences, and one had 3. It was seen that the use of acyclovir led to quick improvement.

While it is uncommon, it affects people of all ages, both genders.  You must immediately seek professional medical help if you are its victim.

Eczema herpeticum usually appears as clusters of umbilicated vesicles in areas affected by an underlying dermatitis.

Symptoms of Eczema Herpeticum:

The symptoms of eczema herpeticum are:

  • A high temperature
  • An extensive rash with small skin blisters filled with yellowish pus
  • Unwell feeling
  • Covering whole of the skin by the rash
  • Malaise
  • Lymphadenopathy

Eczema Herpeticum Treatment:

Treatment for eczema herpeticum starts by discontinuing the topical steroids. It further includes:

  • Compresses of lukewarm water on the affected area
  • Use of antibiotics like cloxacillin for the treatment of secondary staphylococcus infection – This is vital
  • Oral anti-viral medications like Acyclovir or Famciclovir are also important
  • Eczema herpeticum is a disease you shouldn’t think of as treatable with a home remedy. Medical attention is a must in case of eczema herpeticum. The treatment for eczema herpeticum outlined above is just a home care for the disease.
